After a long 3 year battle with the City and NYParks we were granted permission by NYCDesign to fully restore the Mosaic to it's original glory. Rockaway feels it particularly important to Remember our 9/11 Heroes with a special and unique memorial befitting our very own amazing Rockaway heros. From the park inception NYParks said they are not in the business of maintaining unique artworks. With 1500 parks in the City, they had their hands full so we would be on our own. So in 2002 the Chamber of Commerce held the art competions and raised all the funds to build not only the artworks but the entire Park as well. With Hurricane Sandy we thought they would devote part of their 2.4 million Park renovation fund to the artworks, but they didn't.
Now it's back in our court to fully fund and restore the mosaic, "our" mosaic. The Dome was not submerged in storm water and appears sound.
